Frequently Answered Questions

Q: Running shoes or spikes?

A: Definitely running shoes would be best for the season and racing as a whole! Spikes are not required to race or compete. There many be some advantages to wearing spikes on the grass courses however. Many stores have deals for athletes participating on team around the Des Moines metro. Two options are Heartland Soles in Johnston or Fleet Feet in Des Moines

Q: Running clothes?

A: During the first part of our season, comfortbale shorts should be fine for most days, as well as a t-shirt. Later in October and early November, the weather could get a little cooler. That being said, always be mindful of the weather. I'd rather kids be warm and take off a layer than cold and shivering.

Q: Water bottle?

A: Yes, always send your athlete with a water bottle. We won't run the entire practice. Breaks are offered and hydration is important.

Q: What to eat before or after running?

A: Before running, good hyrdation with water is very important. Also some good carbohydrates (fruit, yogurt, toast, etc.) something that breaks down readily and is light in the sytem. After running, a healthy protein along with a carb, like before is what the body is looking for to recover, is encouraged (lean meat or fish, natural peanut butter, ect.) And always drinking water is key. Sports drinks have a great deal of sugar and aren't necessarily required after all runs. Sometimes after a very vigorous workout of long race, a sports drink is ok to have!
